You Remembered!

Updated: Oct 16, 2023

You have searched me, LORD, and you know me. Psalm 139:1 NIV

I have 4 kids; 3 of them are my “step kids,” but I call them my own. I have been in their lives since they were very young, and I have been married to their Dad for 16 years…so loving them and being a part of their life is natural for me.

One of the things I love to do with my oldest stepdaughter (she is 26) is to take her lunch at work if I know that she’s having a hard day or a stressful week. There is a restaurant in our town, and they have the best burgers with special sauce. One day, I texted my daughter and asked if she wanted lunch. She replied with a yes; so I told her what I was going to order for her. When she read the text, she responded with, “You remembered!!” She was floored that I knew her exact order. A few months prior, I was taking her lunch, and when she told me what she wanted, I saved it in my notes file on my phone. I do that; I have a file for all of the people that I love. If they tell me they like something or want something, I make note of it, and I like to surprise them with their favorite things. It is just something that I started doing to show them that they are seen, heard and loved. It is like second nature to me.

That interaction with my daughter stood out to me; her “You remembered!!” response reminded me of how I feel when God blesses me with a desire of my heart.

You see, God knows you and I way more intimately than I know my kids. He created us; He is the author of our story. Jeremiah 1:5 says, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you; before you were born, I set you apart.” It is so easy to forget that He knows ALL things about us, and he doesn’t need to keep a note file on his iPhone of things we love and desire – because He just knows. Psalm 139:1-2 says “You have searched me, LORD, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.” He gets us, like really gets us. Something happens to us when we feel seen. We gain confidence; we feel safe, and we feel like we can be ourselves.

The next time God answers a prayer, or an unexpected blessing comes your way – take some time to thank Him for “remembering,” and thank Him for knowing you fully and completely. Thank Him for being a good father…He might not be bringing you a yummy burger on a stressful day, but He gives you the desires of your heart and then some. Because He loves you, He will bless you beyond all you can dream or imagine…and that’s way better than just remembering your fast food order.
