"I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever."
Psalm 86:12
I don’t know about you, but fall is one of my favorite seasons. I just love the transition from warm to chilly, and the beauty of God’s creation on display with the changing leaves. Ok, so I live in the south, and it doesn’t start getting cooler until around mid-November…but still! The seasonal changes and transition from summer to fall reminds me of the many seasons and transitions of motherhood. Sometimes it seems as if just around the time we figure out that sleep schedule or teenage mood, the kids switch it up on us again!
As mothers, we watch our children grow and pass through many different ages and stages on their journey to adulthood. Some of those seasons involve sleepless nights. Some involve temper tantrums and emphatic declarations of independence. Yet, in each season, God’s goodness abounds. As a mom of a newly blended family, our holiday season is looking a little different this year. All the kids won’t always be under our roof at the same time. As I prayed and pondered on how we could make the holiday season special in spite of sharing time with the kids with other parents, I was gently reminded by my Heavenly Father to put my trust in Him in EVERY season. As a family, we decided to begin some new traditions that can be continued year after year, no matter where the kids spend their holidays. This year, we’re celebrating “Thanksmas,” a fusion of Thanksgiving and Christmas, at a time that everyone can be together to fellowship and celebrate. Truly, what better thing is there to be thankful for than the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ?
In Psalm 86, we read David’s song of crying out to God for help in the midst of a season of difficulty and turmoil. Although the most commonly quoted part of the chapter is verse 12, where he gives thanks to God, the reality is that he was in deep anguish when those words were written. He had enemies surrounding him on every side trying to take his life. Yet even in those moments, he was giving thanks and praise to God. The season of life he was in did not diminish his faith. In verse 7 he says, “when I am in distress I call to you because you will answer.” He praised God for his faithfulness and thanked him for what he KNEW God was going to do.
What can you give God thanks for this week? I am thankful for quality time with family and new memories being made, despite the transitional season my family and I find ourselves in. Maybe your holiday season looks a little different this year too. Perhaps you find yourself mourning the loss of a loved one, praying for a wayward teen, or even adjusting to a new bundle of joy in your home. Whatever season you’re in, mama, give thanks to the Lord. He is faithful, and he is near. His love endures forever!
