God Holds Us Near

“But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.”

Ephesians 2:13 (NLT)

Have you ever consoled your child after a fall?

I have a two-and-a-half-year-old son, Luke, who has no fear. He climbs tall swing sets, runs on concrete sidewalks like he’s an Olympian, and never thinks twice about jumping as high as he can in a bounce house or on a trampoline. Most of the time he lands on his feet, but on occasion, gravity gets the best of him.

On a recent family walk, Luke asked if he could run in front of us on the sidewalk. My husband and I said yes, and off he went. Within about 20 feet, Luke lost his balance and flew forward, landing face-first onto the gray concrete. You can imagine the volume of the cry he let out after one of those seemingly never-ending moments of silence.

I rushed over to pick him up, console him, and examine his wounds. I never thought twice about whether or not I would hold him close, wipe his tears, and try to make it all better. The thought of leaving him never crossed my mind.

As moms, it’s easy to forget that in the same way we hold or once held our kids near when they fall, God holds us near.

Ephesians 2:13 (NLT) says, “But now you have been united with Christ Jesus. Once you were far away from God, but now you have been brought near to him through the blood of Christ.”

Isn’t that a beautiful truth to take to heart today? Through Jesus, you are near to God. His presence is with you at all times, no matter what you’re facing and no matter how far you feel from Him. Our faults and feelings don’t determine His faithfulness.

Friend, as you enter into your day today, tempted to get distracted by everything under the sun that creates distance between you and God (been there), remember God is near. He wants to put his arm around you, pull you close, tell you He loves you, and fill your heart with joy and peace that only He can provide. If you’re feeling far from God today, I encourage you to read Ephesians 2:13 out loud. Ask God to help you feel His presence in undeniable ways so you can taste and see that He is good.
